General program policies

All YA programs (Mahwah teens entering grades 6+) are free.
Signup is necessary unless otherwise noted, and can be done either in person @ the Young Adult Librarian’s desk or by phone.
In case of inclement weather, call the library at 201-529-7323 and choose menu option 6 for emergency closing information. Programs cancelled for inclement weather will be rescheduled.

Anime / Manga Club The club meets twice a month to watch anime, talk manga, and play games.
Food For Thought Teen Book Discussion For grades 6 – 10: Teens can choose any book that they’ve read to discuss. 
Gaming Club Twice a month: Play games like “Wii Sports,” “Wii Play,” “Mario Kart,” “Dance Dance Revolution,” and more.  Bring your own “E” or “T” rated Wii games, extra remotes, nunchuks, and wheels. Lots of other games too!
Miscellaneous Music Bring your iPod or a favorite CD to share with the group.  Each month, we’ll listen and review other types of music that may be new to you.
Scrabble Club Grades 6+: Learn cool new words to boost your score and your vocabulary!
Teen Advisory Board The TAB meets monthly with Denise J. to suggest and develop new teen library programs and activities. Come on in, speak up, and let us know what you like!
Yoga Anyone?
Sign-up begins Mon., Dec. 14th and MUST be done in person!
Six Wednesdays in January and February at 3:30 pm: Try some basic yoga moves and cardio-fitness workouts with instructional DVDs and “Wii Fit.” BYO yoga mat if you own one, wear comfortable clothing and shoes, and if possible, you are recommended to get your doctor’s okay.

Teen Tech Week Raffle! This year's theme is “Learn, Create, Share @ Your Library!” Pick up an entry form at the YA Librarian's desk beginning Sunday, Mar. 7 to enter a special raffle contest. All contestants must be able to correctly answer some questions to win, and the winner will receive a “GameStop” gift card. The raffle drawing will be held on Monday, Mar. 15.

Monopoly Madness Tournament! for teens grades 6+ Reading of rules and table assignments will begin at 3:00 pm. There will be two rounds of play, each lasting one hour. Round 1 will begin at 3:15 pm. The grand prize winner will receive a gift card to Toys"R"Us, and small prizes will be awarded to all other participants. The tournament will end at approximately 5:15 pm.

April is National Poetry Month!
Starting Thursday, April 1,
teens in grades 6+ can stop by the Teen Librarian's desk to pick up
a special form to fill out and submit an original poem or song.
Once they've turned in their forms, they'll receive a small reward.
All poems and songs will be posted on the library's Teen Blog.

The Second Annual Mahwah Student Film & Video Film Festival! The festival will feature works by students in middle school, high school, and college up to age 24, whose projects were submitted and accepted in advance. These student filmmakers are invited along with their families and friends to attend, introduce, and talk about their films. This unique experience will offer students the opportunity to share their creative abilities and viewpoints with the public. Prizes will be awarded on both nights of the film festival.

Film Festival entries accepted starting Monday, November 23!

The Mahwah Public Library invites
middle school, high school and college students
interested in film and video production to enter the second annual
“Mahwah Student Film & Video Festival,”
set for April 14 & 15, 2010 from 5:30 – 8:00 pm.
Students (up to age 24) are invited to submit
original short films (20 minutes or less in running time)
by Friday, March 12, 2010.

The festival will offer students the opportunity to share their films,
creative abilities, and viewpoints with the public.

Prizes will be awarded on both nights of the film festival.

  • There is no fee to submit work, but students may only submit one project for consideration.
  • The range and style of films may include (but are not limited to) animation, comedy or parody, commercials, documentary, short feature, experimental, music video, personal narratives, and even public service announcements (PSA).
  • The student filmmakers who have films selected for the festival will be invited to attend, introduce, and talk about their films.
  • Students can pick up their submission guidelines and entry form from the Young Adult Librarian beginning Monday, November 23, 2009, or print from here.
